One Million Cells and Ten Thousand Panels: Digital Fabrication of Elbphilharmonies Acoustic Interior

The Elbphilharmonie, Herzog & de Meuron’s spectacular concert hall project in the northern German port town of Hamburg is due to open in January of 2017. Nearly a decade in the making, the entire project is comprised of approximately 1,300,000 sq ft of layered spaces, including three concert halls, a hotel, apartments, restaurants, a parking garage, and a public observation platform. The heart of the project is the Great Hall, developed by Herzog & de Meuron in collaboration with the highly esteemed acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota. It seats 2,150 people and exhibits a highly advanced, custom developed acoustic interior skin. The curvilinear, intricately intertwining wall, balustrade, and ceiling design of the Great Hall is comprised of 10,000 unique gypsum fiber panels with a special sound diffusing pattern applied to each piece, which all fit together like a large puzzle. In 2009, signs were unfavourable for founding a new company. The stock exchange and the banking system slid into dangerous turbulence. Despite general perceptions of economic uncertainty, the geometer Benjamin S. Koren decided to endeavour into a unique venture nevertheless. His vision was put into action. 1:One | Computational Geometry endeavors to bridge the gap between traditional craftsmanship and state of the art computational techniques towards the realization of complex architectural projects. Its main office, centrally located in Frankfurt, Germany is integrated into a network of highly skilled cooperative manufacturing firms.

FROM A POETIC VISION TOWARDS A PROGRAMMED REALITY

Construction of a 6 meter large Light‐Test Model of Jean Nouvel’s Louvre Abu Dhabi

Jean Nouvel has a subtle and ingenious vision for the planned branch of the Louvre museum in Abu Dhabi: a gigantic dome, 180 meters in diameter, perforated by layers of superimposed cladding patterns, will filter the blazing desert sun onto the white museum gallery buildings below. The architect calls this virtuoso effect his „rain of light“.
