The most interesting thing about Herzog and De Meuron’s newly opened concert hall, the Elbphilharmonie, isn’t its wave-like facade, which rises above the city of Hamburg, Germany. It’s not the gently curved elevator at the base of the lobby that deposits you into the belly of the Swiss architects’ alien landscape. And it’s not the Escher-esque stairways that guide you from one floor to the next.
Though Hamburg’s $843 million philharmonic is filled with stunning architectural gems, its most interesting feature is the central auditorium, a gleaming ivory cave built from 10,000 unique acoustic panels that line the ceiling, walls, and balustrades. The room looks almost organic—like a rippling, monochromatic coral reef—but bringing it to life was a technological feat.

Für die Akustik in der Hamburger Elbphilharmonie wird ein enormer Aufwand getrieben. Sie soll eines der besten zehn Konzerthäuser der Welt sein. Das hängt vor allem von ganz besonderen Gipsplatten ab.
Wenn der Dirigent in der Hamburger Elbphilharmonie am 10. Januar 2017 zum ersten Mal den Taktstock hebt, dann wird Benjamin Samuel Koren aus Frankfurt im Publikum sitzen und so nervös sein wie noch nie in seinem Leben. Ist die Akustik dumpf wie in anderen hochdekorierten, aber lausig klingenden Konzertsälen und verschluckt die Bratschen schon auf dem ersten Rang? Sind die ersten Geigen vorne zwar noch differenziert zu hören, weiter hinten aber nur noch matschig? Die Elbphilharmonie soll eines der zehn besten Konzerthäuser der Welt sein, nicht trotz, sondern wegen ihrer Akustik, so wollen es ihre Erbauer. Auch Benjamin Samuel Koren, Informatiker und Musiker, Architekt und Feingeist, hat lange dafür gearbeitet, diesem hohen Anspruch so nahe wie nur möglich zu kommen.

An enormous effort is underway for the acoustics in the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie concert hall. It is supposed to become one of the ten best concert halls in the world one day, largely due to uniquely designed gypsumfiber boards.
As the conductor raises his baton for the first time in the Hamburg concert hall on January 10th, 2017, Benjamin Samuel Koren from Frankfurt will be sitting in the audience, nervous as never nefore in his life. Are the acoustics as muffled as they are in other highly decorated, but lousy sounding concert halls? Will the sound of the violas even be noticeable past the first balconies? Will you hear the first violins distinctly in the front row, but only muddled further back? The developers’ intention for the Elbphilharmonie is for it to become one of the ten best concert halls in the world, not despite but because of its acoustics. Benjamin Samuel Koren, computer scientist and musician, architect as well as a fine spirit has also worked hard to help achieve this ambitious goal.

The Elbphilharmonie, a concert hall in Hamburg encased in glass and set upon a giant brick warehouse, is surrounded on three sides by the waters of the city’s bustling harbor.
